Barba Azul Nature Reserve

At Kiezebrink, we believe that responsible nutrition and wildlife conservation go hand in hand. That’s why we support the Barba Azul Nature Reserve in Bolivia — a unique sanctuary protecting the endangered ecosystems of the Beni savanna and its remarkable biodiversity.

For every bag of our DK Insectivore diet sold, €2.50 is donated directly to the reserve. Hereby helping fund critical conservation efforts led by Asociación Armonía, Bolivia’s leading bird conservation NGO.

What Makes Barba Azul Special?

The Barba Azul Nature Reserve spans 11,000 hectares of hyper-seasonal savanna, forest islands, and wetlands. It is the world’s only protected area for the Critically Endangered Blue-throated Macaw, and also provides refuge for species such as giant anteaters, tamanduas, maned wolves, and jaguars.

The reserve is a biodiversity hotspot, home to:

  • Over 288 bird species, including migratory shorebirds and rare tyrants.
  • Around 30 mammal species, documented via camera traps.
  • A rich aquatic ecosystem with lake and river-dependent fish and plant species.

Conservation in Action

Barba Azul is more than a safe haven — it’s a living laboratory for ecological research and sustainable land management. Key activities include:

  • Savanna management and sustainable cattle ranching: Experimental zones allow researchers to study grazing pressure and its impact on biodiversity.
  • Forest restoration: Efforts focus on regenerating palm forest islands dominated by the Motacu Palm, essential for macaw survival.
  • Controlled fire experiments: These help understand species diversity and reduce wildfire risks.
  • Protection of pre-Hispanic raised islands: These ancient landforms offer insights into historical land use and soil ecology.
  • Biodiversity monitoring: Ongoing studies track wildlife populations and ecosystem health.

Why Kiezebrink’s Support Matters

By choosing DK Insectivore diet, our customers directly contribute to the protection of one of South America’s most threatened ecosystems. The funds help maintain firebreaks, support field rangers, and enable scientific research — all essential to preserving the delicate balance of the Beni savanna.

Together with Asociación Armonía, Kiezebrink is proud to play a role in ensuring that Bolivia’s unique wildlife and habitats are protected for generations to come.
